In the beginning she is happy and carefree but towards the end she is ashamed of her husband because he is really angry at her and Desiree commits suicide. Then a strange, an awful change in her husband's manner, which she dared not ask him to explain.
When he heard his name uttered, he looked up, and his mistress was pointing to the door. This is why he decides to alienate himself from both wife and child before society judges his behavior.
